兩相依＋斷鴻零雁記 |

Translated into English in 1924 as "The Lone Swan", 斷鴻零雁記 was originally serialised in 太平洋報 in 1912 when the author was in his late twenties.
Only in 1919 did it appear in book form, a year after the passing of Su Manshu, the Reverend Mandju. The story was also translated into Japanese in 1938,
and probably into French too. The English translation was by George Kin Leung and published in Shanghai.
From Chapter 19, when 静子 asks 三郎 about the letter from Hong Kong written by Miss Roberts:
『奈何以此蟹行烏絲惑吾三郎，怏怏至此田地？』. 蟹行 refers to the horizontal text direction of English.
The song is a Chinese version of the original Japanese song おさらば東京 (Goodbye Tokyo). This dual identity of the song befits the theme of the story.
Of the 27 chapters of the story, twelve chapters — chapters 8 to 19 — are scenes taking place in Japan, in Zushi (逗子) and Hakone (箱根).
While Kawai Saburo (河合三郎) has some negative comments on China, he has almost no bad feelings about Japan, his home country in the story.
