". . . the nishikigoi . . . , originally bred in Niigata Prefecture, is world famous. There are over 20 types of nishikigoi, and expensive specimens are displayed at annual fairs.

"The multicolored nishikigoi was bred in the Edo period (1600-1868) from red and white sports."
